Level 1 Kayaking Skills-
Paddle Canada

Cost: from $260

Length: 2 days (13 hours)

Rating: Beginner

The Course

This 12 hour minimum Paddle Canada certification course takes you through the kayaking skills you will need for day trips in protected waters. We go over the equipment, how to prepare it, how to maintain it, and what is required by law. After the beginning introduction, we learn to launch, then get onto the water to learn and practice some skills in the kayak. We do rescues and learn paddling skills to give you more confidence on the water.

The course should give you the confidence and skills to paddle in calm, flat water up to light chop in a protected area, on extended trips for a day. If you want to get the skills to be able to go out on overnight trips, join our Level 2 Kayaking Skills course. This is a Paddle Canada certification course.

Itinerary

This is our typical course itinerary. (Because we are travelling in a natural environment, itineraries can change. There are many factors that can affect how a course actually runs.)

This course usually begins in Cowichan Bay, at the Coastal Bliss kayak dock at 1765 Cowichan Bay Rd. at 9:00 am, OR it begins in Maple Bay, at the public boat launch at 9:00 am. Day 2 could be at a different location, depending on weather and sea state.

We begin with on land instruction with gear and basics.

We move into the water late morning for some practical skills instruction.

We usually break for lunch about 12:30, then return to the course by about 1:15.

In the afternoon, we continue with some practical skills, and end with the in-water (not ON, but IN) activities.

We finish up about 4:00 pm.

Day 2 follows a similar itinerary, but we try to be finished by 3:00 pm.

Preparing

It is very important for you and for the rest of your course group that you are fit enough to handle the level of difficulty and demand with no problems. Our instructors know how to minimize the impact of these demands as much as possible, but they cannot remove them. The depth of your experience can only increase if you have made sure that you have prepared well.

Our Level 1 Skills courses require some fitness, or enough stamina to paddle all day for two days. You should be physically able. We will be lifting and carrying kayaks and gear.

Part of the preparation is to have the right clothing. We will be getting wet as part of the instruction, so you will need an extra set of dry clothes. A wetsuit or drysuit would be appropriate, particularly in BC waters. If you need a wetsuit, we can provide one as a rental option. Otherwise, quick-drying, insulating, synthetic clothing is best.

Your preparation will be different for different activities. You will be given instructions for how to prepare for any course you sign up for. These are usually in pdf format. If you do not have the Adobe Reader, you can download it from the Adobe site by clicking here.
