Level 2 Kayaking Skills-
Paddle Canada

Cost: from $540

Length: 4 days

Rating: Intermediate

The Course

This 4 day and minimum of one overnight Paddle Canada certification course takes you through the kayaking skills you will need for more challenging and longer trips in waters that can be a bit dynamic, including currents up to 3 knots, winds less than 20 knots, and sea state less than one metre. We go over the equipment and gear needed for overnight trips, the safety considerations, weather, seas, and navigation. There is a significant technical component to this course, as well as a strong practical component. Rescues will be in more dynamic conditions.

The course should give you the confidence and skills to meet more challenging conditions and to enjoy the overnight kayaking experience.

Itinerary

This is one possible course itinerary. (Because we are travelling in a natural environment, itineraries can change. There are many factors that can affect how a course actually runs.)

This course usually begins in Cowichan Bay, meeting at the Coastal Bliss offices.

Day 1: We have a day of basic skills, both on-water, and on-land. We usually begin on water in Cowichan Bay. After the morning session on water, we return to the beach or to Coastal Bliss, depending on conditions, for technical instruction and preparation for the overnight portion of the course.

Day 2: We begin in the morning at our put in location. After we gear up and have some early on-water instruction and assessment, we travel to our overnight camping location. After lunch, we carry on with on land instruction with gear, and technical skills. The rest of the day will be varied between on land and water-based instruction near the campsite. The evening is a discussion about meals, weather, and conditions.

Day 3: After breakfast, we discuss the day's paddling, and trip planning before heading out on the water. The morning will be on-water instruction, leading to lunch. After lunch, we may be on-water or on-land, depending on conditions. Evening discusions at camp.

Day 4: This will follow along with Day 3, in a similar format for the morning. We will return to the put-in location by lunch time, have our lunch and do our final discussions and assessments before concluding the course in the afternoon.

Preparing

It is very important for you and for the rest of your course group that you are fit enough to handle the level of difficulty and demand with no problems. Our instructors know how to minimize the impact of these demands as much as possible, but they cannot remove them. The depth of your experience can only increase if you have made sure that you have prepared well.

Our Level 2 Skills courses require good fitness, and stamina. We are paddling in real conditions for four days. You should be physically able. We will be lifting and carrying kayaks and gear.

Part of the preparation is to have the right clothing. We will be getting wet as part of the instruction, so you will need an extra set of dry clothes. Quick-drying, insulating, synthetic clothing is best. A wetsuit or drysuit will be invaluable, particularly in BC waters. If you need a wetsuit, we can provide one as a rental option.

Your preparation will be different for different activities. You will be given instructions for how to prepare for any course you sign up for. These are usually in pdf format. If you do not have the Adobe Reader, you can download it from the Adobe site by clicking here.
