Vancouver Island BC Hiking
Mini Juan de Fuca Trail
2 or 3-day Backpacking Tour
*$1125 , $1390 + 3% booking fee + 5% Goods & Services Tax
The Juan de Fuca Trail was completed in 1996 as an extension of the West Coast Trail experience in commemoration of the 1994 Commonwealth Games. It was intended to be a bit shorter and less strenuous than the West Coast Trail, but over the years, it has worn itself into a strenuous journey. We have been guiding the Juan de Fuca Trail since 1998. The Juan de Fuca Trail is accessible by highway all along its route via access trails. This trail is less exposed than the West Coast Trail, so the terrain is a little less varied, but that is hardly noticeable. The beaches and forest are still magnificent.
This two day mini tour is a great overnight hiking experience for active people with little to no experience backpacking or wilderness camping. You get an idea of what a fairly rough, technical trail can be, with a bit of a safety net; and the itinerary can be custom built to meet your expectaions. Contact us for more information.

Itinerary
Itinerary
This is one possible itinerary for this tour out of many. Our intention for this tour is that we co-create the itinerary. However, because we are travelling in wilderness, itineraries can change. There are many factors that can affect how a tour actually runs, even with clear plans. We confirm pickup times by phone, email or SMS at least 12 hours before, but since this tour is meant to be more personalized, expect to be in regular contact.Expect to meet up the evening before starting to go over gear and packing.
This trip begins in Nanaimo, where we will arrange your pickup to drive to the location where we begin the activity.

Possible Itinerary 1
This would be a western end trip, starting at Sombrio Beach and travelling to the trailhead at Botanical Beach. Point of origin can also be Cowichan Valley.
-
Day One
1/4 Travel Day: Participants meet guides at a specified location in Victoria (point of origin) for an early start. Following introductions and equipment check the group are transported to the middle trailhead at Sombrio Beach after a vehicle shuffle for our return. Boots and packs on and the hike begins from Sombrio. This first day will be the more complicated area, having to navigate on a cobblestone beach, taking tides into account. We have lunch along the way. We stop for camp about 12 km into the trail at Payzant Creek Campsite for the night. There, we set up our camp, have dinner, and go over the day.
-
Day Two
Up in the morning for a camp cooked breakfast, we pack up and head west toward Botanical Beach. The next seven km will take about 3 to 4 hours to complete. We will stop for lunch along the way. The morning can be leisurely or it can be a bit more committed, depending on what needs are. If we finish early enough, we can stop at Avatar Grove to see the big trees. 1/4 travel day to return to Nanaimo or Cowichan.
-
Possible Itinerary 2
This second alternative is more strenuous, but mostly less technical than the first itinerary. We start out sort of mid-trail off the road, near Bear Beach, ending at Sombrio Beach the next day. Point of origin can also be Cowichan Valley.

Day One
1/4 Travel Day: Participants meet guides at a specified location in Victoria (point of origin) for an early start. Following introductions and equipment check the group are transported to the roadside trailhead for Bear Beach after a vehicle shuffle for our return. Boots and packs on and the hike begins from the road down to Bear Beach, then on to Chin Beach for the evening. This first day is about 13 km. At camp, we set up, have dinner, and go over the day.
-
Day Two
Up for a cooked breakfast, we pack up and head out for the last 8 km to Sombrio Beach. This second day has less ups and downs, but does have a steeper, more technical section just before Sombrio. This is a beautifal area. We end up at Sombrio, where we will look at the waterfull in the cliff face and watch the surfers until we head back to civilization. We end the day back at Nanaimo or Cowichan.

Preparing
Preparing For Your Trip
How you prepare for your adventure is important. Being well prepared will enhance the quality of your experience. Because we are travelling in wilderness, it is very important for you and for the rest of your adventure group that you are fit enough to handle the level of difficulty and demand with no problems. Our guides know how to minimize the impact of these demands as much as possible, but they cannot remove them. The depth of your experience can only increase if you have made sure that you have prepared well.
Your preparation will be different for different activities. Preparing for a kayak trip is different from preparing for a hiking trip. We have provided some basic information that can be downloaded through the following links to pdf documents.
Use the links below to download some of the preparation files for this hiking or kayaking tour. When you book your tour, we will send you a complete preparation packet to help you get ready. Please take this seriously. Most people are unaware of the demands of a coastal environment, particularly with keeping dry and warm. Your preparation will really help make your coastal hiking or kayaking tour a great experience. -
